I enjoyed hearing your story, and came to realize you and I have a lot in common. My daughter plays strings too (viola), I’m also an engineer, and I once lived in the Central Valley. It was great to hear that the support of the community is helping your guitar journey. Capricho Arabe will soon be within your grasp!
Roger, thanks again for another great one. Nicely done!
Hi Roger: this was a two-fer for me . . . the day was sunny and cool, and as I started the walk I discovered I had missed the last podcast, so I had the pleasure of taking a walk with Brent and Erica and you as well. The podcasts really make the academy feel like an academy.
Thank you Roger! This was great getting to know another member. I can’t wait for the holidays to hear Erica and her daughter play. Such a musical family.
Thanks Roger and Erica. This was really enjoyable to hear on a rainy Friday in Berlin on the eve of another lockdown, great to hang out with both of you. It sounds like I would really like the cooking in your household. Homeschooling and how you came to CGC and the guitar, as well as your experience here so far, all great stuff! Looking forward to hearing you and your daughter in December. I assume it is the following? https://youtu.be/Ok1Hqbfsn0w
I know it because it is the most popular excerpt from an endless piece(it can take two hours and forty minutes to perform the entire oratorio!) and I played it once in 1984. There is only one number where the horns are involved so it is a lot of sitting and listening and being nervous, because when we do play we have to go up to our high d! Best wishes as you progress toward Capricho Arabe.
Roger – Yes, Guitoberfest was absolutely amazing! Also, congratulations on your new job. I hope it’s going well.
Erica – You’ve made so much progress in a short time! I’m glad you found CGC and are really making it work for you! Good luck as you continue on your journey, and I look forward to hearing duets from you and your daughter.
Thank you both for another interesting interview!

It was wonderful to meet you Erica. Thank you for sharing your background and history with the guitar, and congratulations on your progress thus far. Your hard work is obviously paying off. Like others, I look forward to hearing you and your daughter play together later this year. What a treat! I must confess, I secretly hope you don’t find a flamenco school any time soon, lest you be tempted to jump ship on us! Best of luck to you as you continue your CGCA journey!
Roger, your awesomeness, I must say you’ve become quite the podcast interviewer! Thank you for another most enjoyable listen. Wishing you continued success with the new job! Warmest regards, Mark
Another great episode! Thank you Erica for sharing your story with us. I definitely can relate to hearing that one gorgeous piece and getting the drive to play classical guitar. What’s even better is that I learn more I’m finding even more (Mertz) music that keeps me excited about playing. I’m really looking forward to seeing the video of you and your daughter doing a duet! I hope you get the most out of that experience. I’m hoping one of my kids grows up to play an instrument just for that. I gotta get practicing for that day! 😋
Erica I loved getting to know you! You are an inspiration I loved how you are invested in your daughter’s learning and it’s great you found the nature based Waldorf curriculum. You are relentless in researching finding ways to grasp knowledge no matter what it is you want to learn. You’re first duet submission is so good I wish you were my neighbor… no let me rephrase that I lived here in the 7th Ward (25 years now) although I’m in love with my diverse neighborhood I’m longing for trees so haha… I wish I was YOUR neighbor. I love how your daughter is so central to you. In my podcast I was shocked I didn’t fill the whole time talking about my kids when they hear it they will be so proud of me ( and probably relieved) I didn’t only go on about them but that I reflected about me. I look forward to your holiday duet. What kind of engineering do you do? I’m intrigued. You’re playing is really good I’m going to seek out your exam. Keep up the exceptional work. Have you started a journal yet? I’m struggling to get mine off the ground. Have fun with your duet challenge I look forward to seeing your progress. Janie from Wisconsin and I did the last one but my husband and I are undergoing a large renovation project in our home under a city program so I couldn’t take on this challenge this time around. Happy playing!!!
Peace,
Heidi Beth
Great to hear about your life and interests Erica. A fellow engineer – we engineers should form a band :) You’ve progressed quickly and your musical talent shines through.
I’m with your daughter that middle school is something to avoid.
