So nice to listen to for my lunchtime break today! I especially liked how you played the Sagreras piece which I’ve been working on myself…gave me some ideas for sure. Also, I loved the one right after that which I haven’t started working on and I’m wondering what the name of that one is?
Thanks,

This past week I tried to work on the issues that Niki pointed out to me above. Plus I worked on part of Romanza and included a small section here in this video. Listening to my own recording, I notice that I’m separating some notes that should be played together so I need to work on that. I’m not sure if this is about how long of a section of…[Read more]

Wow, thank you for the great feedback Niki…I just saw this as I was getting ready to post my next video so I’ll work on those for the coming week and I really appreciate the instructions since I wasn’t really sure where to go with it.
In my current video I have used the “m” finger for the first two notes of the arpeggio as Simon discusses being…[Read more]

Baseline Giuliani, 13 and 32. Working on getting them smoother and more musical for now. Haven’t looked at the Romanza lesson yet so need to do that soon.

Thanks for inviting me to the group. I am early in the Grade 6 and I’m sure this will help me. Honestly I haven’t been too interested in getting into the more advance theory stuff so I’m not sure I’ll be submitting anything after Grade 5 that I recently completed, but I still plan to learn as much as I can and just take my time. Simon says I need…[Read more]

I may have speeded it up a little too much in my latest video, didn’t realize that until I just watched it. I’m still having a lot of trouble with the slur in measure 14. I may leave it out. I see in the video that in measure 12 I as pushing one of the strings too much out of place also….glad I noticed that though.

Hi Mark and thanks for the feedback! Yes, I do think it is but it’s a little tricky for me. I’m not very consistent with that ending yet :) Plenty to work on still going into the last couple weeks!

Thanks Dave for the great advice on the slur technique. I will definitely work on that this coming week. I just saw your post after recording my latest video but it gives me something else to concentrate on this week.
For the current week just passed, I slowed it down and tried to bring out the melody more. But it doesn’t come across as much in…[Read more]David Barnard replied to the topic David Barnard, Lagrima (Grade 6) in the forum Challenge #6 Repertoire Excerpts 7 months ago
Thanks Goran! I honestly hadn’t even thought of that but you’re right and I will definitely keep that in mind now!

Thanks Scott!
And thank you Dave for the teaching tips. I have already recorded my next video but will definitely work on those points this coming week!
In measure 14 there is a slur from the D to C with the left 4th finger and I have a hard time getting a good tone there. I think it’s because of the rough callus on the tip of that finger. So I…[Read more]David Barnard started the topic David Barnard, Lagrima (Grade 6) in the forum Challenge #6 Repertoire Excerpts 7 months, 1 week ago
Just looked at this for the first time since I’m just beginning grade 6. Still need to review the instruction video which will probably give me some ideas on how to best play this section and what to focus on. For now, just reading through it and learning the notes. Sorry the sound isn’t great, I think maybe I had the microphone too close or…[Read more]

Like Martha, I too live in MO and have been to some of his performances. I’ve been subscribed to Doug’s “Tip of the Month” for a couple years now and I find them to be excellent as a supplement to CGC. It’s only $24 a year and gives you access to all of the previous ones too. He’d be a great interview for a future Simon podcast in my opinion, just…[Read more]

I do pretty much exactly what Ben describes above with the bedtime application of the oil based product and, most importantly, rubbing it in really well, leaving it on, and then go to sleep. I usually do this during the day once as well during a break at work. In the past 2+ years, I have found that for myself, consistent use of any of the oil…[Read more]

Thank you Gino, yes, my hands felt pretty relaxed on the first piece or two. Unfortunately they started to tense up the further along I went as I was thinking more about not making mistakes so that I wouldn’t have to start over recording again! I really appreciate the comments from all of you, great to have this kind of support.

Well I made it, didn’t think it would be on the last day. I was hoping to get all four of these pieces memorized by the deadline but couldn’t quite do that in time. So I’ll keep working on that for the ones I enjoy playing the most.

Thanks Joannes, this performance of yours gives me some nice ideas for my (hopefully) submission of this level in six months from now. I can get through the pieces but am working on the musicianship aspect which you definitely have down. I really enjoyed listening during my lunch break today!
