Going to try to jump in early this time around… 😉 I would like to celebrate our Month of Mirth with Mertz and give An Malvina from the Bardenklange a try (Opus 13 No 1). I will try to post a status video and a link to the score before the day.
Listened to your chat with Roger this week – well done. Enjoyed it a lot, so I’m taking Roger up on the suggestion of congratulating you here in PJ land.
Confession- I watched your Sor videos 30 times (I liked the one just a bit better and had to watch two extra times) – so it was just me messing up your count. Next time I will t…[Read more]
Enjoy the well-deserved break, Simon (and Dave and Niki)! Try to avoid I-35 on Friday – I expect it won’t be pretty, traffic-wise. But do enjoy the mild Texas weather. And maybe some TexMex on the weekend? Turkey fajitas with grilled jalapeños?
Grateful for you and this community this Thanksgiving.
So very cool to see Ellie following in your footsteps! Can we get her to do a performance seminar spot soon? It is fascinating to see what kids can do before they know that it’s supposed to be difficult… 😀
Nice progress on the Birds / Bourree too. I had the same observation on the hinge barre tension too – and I find myself h…[Read more]
Great conclusion to the “Life of Tárrega,” Scott. Such a wealth of information!
And thanks for the pointer on Judy’s link. First off – wow – that is quite the treasure trove of music. But what I meant to ask after / wish for was a catalogue (with numbers!) There seems to be no assignment of opus numbers by Tárrega or publishers, so it f…[Read more]
So much fun guys! Thanks for sharing this performance. Isn’t the American song based on a German one? (O Tannenbaum)?
I too listened beyond the first song of the Swedish kid vid (thanks Magdalena) and was a bit taken aback that the whole video was about a half hour long. Are there that many Swedish kids songs about busses? 🤪
So glad the h…[Read more]
Ok – one more post and I’ll shut up, I promise! :-)
I wanted to share this Pavel Steidl masterclass on the Tárrega Grand Vals that Dave B recommended to me for broadening my perspectives on right hand technique and tone production. It’s excellent!
Tárrega’s arrangements of chamber music are not only excellent but also seem to have paved the way for future guitarists to borrow repertoire from other instruments reaching new audiences and providing new opportunities to demonstrate the guitar’s expressive capabilities.
Here is a Marc Teichholz performance of two of my favorite Tárrega t…[Read more]
Here is my contribution to the Tárrega celebration – a little prelude in E sometimes subtitled “Una Vision en la Torre del Diablo” – more commonly just referred to as Prelude No 5:
Like much of Tarrega’s music – it’s trickier to play then it may initially appear at first reading. And bringing it up to a level of…[Read more]
Such great work here – both by my fellow students and our esteemed curator.
Please indulge me as I catch up on well-deserved acknowledgements:
Mats – lovely take on the E minor study. It’s a favorite of everyone who has worked the Grade 4 material (including me). Nicely done!
Mark – very nice Adelita. Working on this myself has brought me a…[Read more]
So sorry for your loss, Tom. The passing of those close to us is always challenging in so many ways. The Llobet is a great piece for working through those feelings, I think. You’re doing really well with it. I’ve also been working “the other one” – but plan to do both this “semester.”
I plan to dive into the G6 study group this (long) week…[Read more]
Trying to post on schedule this week…
This week I continued to focus on a) improving left hand efficiency with deliberate fingering of the block chords, b) isolated drills on the sextuplet section, and c) multiple drills of the entire exercise at gradually increasing tempi.
The tempo here is 77 bpm, if memory…[Read more]

Here is my status video of Canso Del Lladre. This is my first attempt at recording and –wow– lots to work on here. The 9th fret harmonics are an obvious point – but so much else too. Early days I guess…
Here is this week’s status video. My schedule doesn’t allow much time for weekday recording these days – so this is about the best I can do. Apologies for the humidifier noise in the background.
This week I focused quite a bit on cleaning up the sextuplets – as these are the bottleneck for higher speeds. I found that carefully shifting the…[Read more]

Please put me down to play Canso de Lladre by Llobet. I will try to post a status video beforehand and can provide a copy of the score if needed.
Scott!!! Man!!! Such an awesome job with Recuerdos. I’m definitely in the camp of “a bit done with that piece” – but I really enjoyed your performance. So well balanced with the bass melody clearly right out front where it belongs while keeping a smooth, shimmering stream of tremolo in support. My only complaint is that your right hand was…[Read more]
