I managed to play the scale at 70 bpm. This is the fastest I was able to play the scale with the i-a and m-a fingers. Any chance I had of playing this scale legato went right out the window at the faster speeds.
There’s still a lot of tension in the right hand, but I think it’s more relaxed at slower tempos now.
Going forward, I think I w…[Read more]

Another big jump in tempo. I’m currently at 55 bpm. I still can’t seem to release the tension in my right hand. I think I’m purposely holding the m-finger out of the way. I’ll have to work on that this week before I up the tempo any more.
I did notice that I’m a little more comfortable using the i and a finger in a repertoire piece that I’m…[Read more]
Dres – The Swan would be a good piece to play at open mic. I was hoping that my first time on that stage would be with one of the other attendees (John R.) who has never played for open mic. It doesn’t look like that is going to happen this year.

It’s been a crazy two weeks! I think I’m ready for another vacation. I came back to work to find a backlog that I am still working on. To make matters worse, my boss brought in a temporary worker to help me out. So now on top of everything else, I get to train someone. 2 years 7 months 21 days to retirement.
This journal is about my gui…[Read more]
This was one of the first pieces my GT gave me when I started taking private lessons last year. He made me play it at a much faster tempo. I really like the way you played it. I’ll have to revisit it again.

I did increase the tempo significantly. This is at 45 bpm, but I’m playing the scale as 1/8 notes. I know that I still have tension in the other fingers. I’m just not comfortable using the a finger yet. I practiced the scale this week using staccato. I think the “shorter” notes helped me get my fingers in place in time.
I’ll be there! Here’s the link to the UMass Fine Arts Center listing for the concert. Tickets are already on sale. It’s a small venue (~140 seats) and they do sell out. I had to sit on a bar stool against the side aisle for Jorge Caballero’s concert because I waited too long to get a…[Read more]
It was great spending time with you this weekend. In the second movement of the Brouwer piece, the travelers were in the Mediterranean. Most likely Greece. I think you were nodding off when they explained the movements. The thing that was said that stood out for me at the master class was that most players don’t bring out the base…[Read more]

I don’t know if this is the best place to post this, but I have a regular size Sagework to sell. I had to switch to a shorter one as I felt that it was holding my Guitar too high. If anyone is looking for one, pm me,

Thanks for the feedback Niki,
I did start using Dave’s synchronization exercises this weekend and hopefully they will help me with this challenge.
I’m not sure that I have my metronome set correctly. It is reading 40 bpm for a 1/4 note, but it feels so slow. Am I supposed to be playing the scale as 1/8 notes? I was tempted to increase the s…[Read more]

I’m a little late starting this challenge as I couldn’t bring my guitar on vacation.
I am going to be working on the D major scale using i-a and m-a alternations. I find that I avoid using the a finger. Hopefully by the end of the month, it will feel just as comfortable as i-m.
The status video is at 35 bpm. I hope to increase the speed by…[Read more]
And almost another three months has gone by since my last post. If it wasn’t for my practice spreadsheet, I’d never remember what I’m working on. As it is, there are a lot of blank spaces next to some important categories.
Unfortunately, I’m without my guitar for the week. I couldn’t even bring my mini Córdoba with me. I’m definitely n…[Read more]

I hope to attend the wrap up session.
I think last weeks video is a better representation of where I’m at with this piece. I didn’t have much time to practice this week and just making the video at our campsite today was a challenge.
I will continue working on it over the next month so I can play it at the next performance class I attend this Fall.
I’m pretty sure I have it memorized and I’ll try to practice without the score in front of me. This coming week, I also plan on working on having my thumb prepared to play earlier. I can hear the hesitation in between the base note and the rest of the arpeggio.
This week I need to work on part B of the Giuliani Study and maybe learn how to roll a chord. For the Aguado piece, I hope to have it memorized this week. That way I can watch my hands and pay more attention to what I am doing.
I can’t believe that I haven’t posted to this journal in over 2 months. So much has happened. I played in my first (I wish I could say my last) student recital. It could have gone better. I had to play 3 pieces; two duets with my teacher with a solo in the middle. It was during the third duet that the nerves finally got the better of me. My…[Read more]
It’s really hard to work on the right hand when I find it difficult to switch between chords with the left. Of course, the splint doesn’t help. I’ll be spending this week on the Giuliani studies.
