I use this technique in a piece by Tavener called ‘Chant’. I’ve used both the index finger and my thumb for this. To my ears (on a guitar with no sound port) the thumb gives me more of the primary tones. What I hear with the index finger is about 30% tone and 70% fingerprint friction on the strings. But the couple times I’ve had people listening, they’ve all liked the index finger brushing better.
